From Public Parks to Global Screens: Akshay Anand's Yoga Journey

My journey began in the small town of Kharkhoda, Haryana, where my family had little beyond the virtues of hard work and hope to offer. Education became my lifeline, and after earning degrees in arts and Hindi, I found my true calling in the ancient science of yoga. With diplomas and certifications from prestigious institutions, I was ready to merge the ancient with the contemporary, to teach yoga not merely as a physical exercise but as a holistic path to well-being.

Starting out, I faced two main challenges: space and perception. Without the financial cushion to rent a studio, I turned to the public parks of Gurugram as my classroom, braving all kinds of weather and the unpredictability of open spaces. Compounding this was the pervasive mindset that yoga should be free, much like any quick online content. Convincing people of the value of structured, personalized yoga, taught face-to-face, was an uphill battle, especially when I had nothing but the sky as my roof.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was a defining moment. With the closure of parks, I was forced to rethink everything. It was then that Anandshala was born, an online sanctuary where people could practice yoga safely at home. This transition to virtual sessions was more than a stopgap; it became a movement. As people grappled with fear and uncertainty, I found a way to serve them, and in return, they gave me their trust. The support I received during this time was immense and became the cornerstone of Anandshala's foundation.

From there, I expanded both my vision and reach. Customizing practices for all ages from 5 to 80, I taught in corporate offices, schools, and religious trusts. Engaging large communities through events like the 21-Day Yoga Camp and “Suryankar” on Vijayadashami, where hundreds performed Surya Namaskars together, reinforced the power of collective energy. My efforts were recognized with awards and records, yet nothing compared to the fulfillment of guiding people through personal transformations.

Today, Anandshala thrives as a comprehensive wellness mission, impacting nearly 8,000 lives through both offline and online programs. Our reach extends beyond India, touching lives in countries like Canada, Singapore, and the United States. As "Grand Master" Akshay Anand, I've helped many not only conquer physical ailments but also find balance amidst life's chaos. My special focus remains on empowering women to reclaim their well-being, teaching them that self-care starts from home.

To those feeling undervalued because their work is perceived as a free commodity, I say this: Your worth is not in the arguments you make, but in the service you render. In crisis, when all else falls away, sincere service will shine through, earning trust that no marketing could ever buy. Discovering joy in serving is key, and the blessings that come will build more than a career — they will build a mission. Serve genuinely, and let them uncover your true value naturally.
