From Fields to Fame: The Melodic Journey of Pushpendra Chauhan

Millions of listeners know Pushpendra Chauhan from Radha-Krishna bhajans like "Koi Jaye Jo Vrindavan" and "Agar Main Radha Radha Gaun." Very few know the story behind that voice. In a Draftover exclusive, the singer, songwriter and music director talked about growing up in a farming family in Dhampur, the failures that nearly broke him, and the sadhana that carried him through.

A Voice That Drew a Crowd

Pushpendra grew up in a humble farmer's family in Dhampur, Uttar Pradesh, and music was his refuge from the start.

"Even as a child, when I sang bhajans, people would gather around," he told us. "Music was my passion, but also my shelter."

At home, though, his family's practical responsibilities came first, and nobody saw music as a way to make a living.

"What Kind of Job Is Singing?"

He was the only son, with four sisters, in a household that was short of money, and he felt the expectations that came with that.

"People would laugh and ask, 'What kind of job is singing?'" he recalled. "Many thought my choice was frivolous."

He didn't give up. He held on to his sadhana, his daily practice and devotion to music, even as money troubles hung over the family.

Two Marks Short, Twice

He calls the hardest chapter of his life a turning point. In high school he failed mathematics twice, and both times he was two marks short.

"The ridicule was relentless," he said. "My sisters were academically gifted, and next to them I felt broken and inadequate."

His cousin, Dr. Bhupendra Anaari, saw how low he had sunk and stepped in. He enrolled Pushpendra in a music academy under Guru Shri Charanpal Ji.

"That one decision reshaped my destiny," Pushpendra said.

When Failure Stopped Being an Option

Once he began formal training, everything changed. He went on to earn a degree in classical music, and while he was still studying, he opened his own music academy in Dhampur to train students who shared his dream.

"Once I embraced music with discipline, failure was no longer an option," he said.

From Dhampur to Every Screen

Digital platforms carried his voice beyond his town. On his YouTube channel, @PushpendraChauhan123, he shares original Radha-Krishna bhajans that he writes and performs, several of them with Amrita Chauhan. The channel describes his work as "soul-stirring and spiritually uplifting," mixing traditional and contemporary styles within devotional music.

"Koi Jaye Jo Vrindavan" and "Agar Main Radha Radha Gaun" were widely loved, and his music is also on Spotify.

"The same voices that once doubted me began to recognise my passion," he told us.

Carrying His Roots to the Stage

Today he is known across the country as a devotional singer, songwriter and music director, and he performs live concerts and events. He hasn't left Dhampur behind, and he says his performances and writing are a way to give back and lift others up.

His Message to Anyone Struggling Today

We asked what he would say to a young person being told their dream isn't a real job.

"Simplicity is the harbinger of success," he said. "Every setback paves the way for future victories, if you stay steadfast. Keep moving towards your goal. The triumphs you seek are written in your perseverance."
